Each year in March since 1973 dog mushers from various nations meet each other in Anchorage, Alaska, to fight against the forces of the nature. The race is more the 1100 miles through the " White Hell " from Anchorage to the Bering Strait, arriving at Nome.
JOE REDINGTON SR. created this world-famous Sled Dog Race in 1973. Until 1997 he competed seventeen races.
On his arrival in 1948 in Alaska Joe Redington, who had been born in 1917 in Oklahoma, had just " $ 18.00 " in his pockets. He paid $ 13.00 for 100 acres near Wasilla and funded his wedding ceremony to Vi, his childhood sweetheart, with credit.
In 1999, at the age of 82 years, Joe Redington, Sr., " The Father of Iditarod " died of cancer. In front of the Iditarod Headquarters in Wasilla remembered a bronze-statue on him.
After several years of battling cancer, Joe Redington's wife, Violet Redington, died in March 2006.
